China Day 13

Long story short:

  • Last night: I’ve been content using the comforter as a mattress and a winter blanket as a pillow, but my host mom thought I must be too hot while sleeping. She took away the one thing protecting me from the rock of a mattress and replaced it with a thin bed sheet. She almost took away my “winter blanket pillow” and I used my broken Chinese to protest it. I was never hot while sleeping; I was actually really comfortable, but oh well. I have AC and extra pillows now.

  • Wake up: sleep to my alarm

  • Breakfast: dumplings and soup

  • School: We learned a little about Chinese food, watched a movie, and then started our party. Our teacher ordered us tea and then we played bingo in place of our 听写. The food that was brought for the party was 汤包, 炒饭, pocky, cookies, watermelon, and McDonalds (thanks Sam).

  • Lunch: because we ate so much food, I ended up skipping lunch to go look at stuff in a convenient store. We still had 45 minutes to kill, so we went back to 南大 in hopes of finding a printer. There I learned that all of us are afraid to ask where the printer is, and also Prindle has a love for red pandas and carries a stuffed red panda in his backpack. I held it hostage for the rest of the day. Eventually we ended up finding the print shop and Jessica got her homework.

  • Storytelling: Turns out this wasn’t a competition, and it was optional. I’m shook and disappointed.

  • KTV: After class ended, 15 of us went to a KTV by the school. There was a little discussion about waiting for the rain to stop or not, but whatever. I think KTV would have been more fun with fewer people, but we brought a big group to get the discount. (7 kuai per person).

  • Movie: My host sister took me to see Despicable Me 3, and I was so excited because there were large chucks of dialogue that I could understand with 100%. I would say I understood a good 70% of the movie. (I mean granted it was a kid movie but I'm ignoring that fact).

  • Dinner: idk what I ordered, because I was feeling pressured. People walked up behind us so I pointed to something with chicken and noodles in it. I’m pretty sure there were intestines or something in the broth. Also wouldn’t discredit the theory that there might have been liver in there as well.

  • Traveling: My host sister and I had a lively discussion about what size bag is appropriate to bring on a trip. I was going to bring my bigger school backpack, but she thinks that it’s too big and wants me to bring my smaller backpack. I conceded because I don’t know how to argue my point in Chinese.

  • Toilets: Don’t put toilet paper in the toilets.
